Appalachian "plain" quilts in

A People and Their Quilts

"In showing her quilts, most any lady of the house will bring out the colorful pieced quilts which once belonged to her grandmother, the beautiful appliqued ones, and the Victorian crazy quilts. Sometimes if you insist that you would like to see all her quilts, she will bring out the utility tacked quilts. As a matter of fact, they are usually stacked and stored separately from the other quilts - as if she doesn’t want them to be associated with her "good" quilts....The tendency to ignore this type of quilt is understandable for it can hardly be classified as beautiful, or eve attractive. Most books on the subject of quilting ignore them altogether. However, from the standpoint of popularity and use, this type of bed covering was one of the most common."
